The OHA Premier League Women did themselves – and the club – proud, in the 2019 Grand Final on Saturday 7th.
They fell just short of the much-desired win, but only after having played in the highest standard game of the season, and proving their skills and grit by coming from behind to level the scores three times. Derwent’s fast start and early 2-0 lead triggered a big response from OHA, with goals from Maddi Brooks and Julia Gunn resetting the scoreboard level at 2-2 at quarter time. It was clear at that point that the OHA women were not going to be over-run in this match. Derwent’s re-established 3-2 lead was countered by a brilliant Sofie McLead steal and run to the circle. Her perfect pass left the goal open for Hannah Richards to finish for 3-3.
Derwent’s confidence looked dented and a second Sofie McLeod run almost set up a lead for OHA, but Julia Gunn’s sliding deflection was just denied by the diving ‘keeper. Sofie also unleashed several trademark power drag-flicks but just couldn’t quite find the target. Derwent then scored again, but this game wasn’t over, and when Jean Flanagan slammed home a fore stick drive on a PC variation, it was 4-4 and anyone’s game. Sadly for OHA fans, a fine deflection by Derwent found a 5th goal that couldn’t be answered, and they won by the narrowest of margins.
Either team would have been disappointed to lose, but congratulations to the Derwent women, who had an excellent season and were able to back up their minor premiership with a win in the GF.
So, a great year for the OHA PL Women: 23 games played, 15 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw, and runners-up by a whisker. A blend of youth and experience that should be at the forefront of the competition again in 2020. Congratulations to the coaching/managing squad of Sam and Sarah McCambridge, Larry Mills and Mark Paynter!
